i just found out that he is currently placed in a highly dangerous and volatile situation. he is right now, at the border between turkey and northern iraq and he will be commanding a team of military doctors and medical personnel to assist and treat soldiers, should a cross-border offensive be launched against the separatist kurdish rebels, the PKK (kurdistan workers' party). the PKK has recently launched a series of hit-and-run attacks from bases in northern iraqi mountains, most recently 2 sundays ago, when a land mine exploded in southeastern Sirnak province (about 15 miles from the iraqi border), killing 13 turkish soldiers (the highest death tolls in recent years). yesterday, the turkish parliament approved a motion authorizing the government to order the military to conduct a cross-border operation into northern Iraq to crack down on the outlawed terrorists.

days before this motion was passed, all army personnel, active and reserve, have been put on standby or sent to the northern iraq border. even though he's not an active member anymore, he will be in the reserve till he's 46. he told me he has been sent there since last saturday. he was supposed to call me on friday when they celebrated seker bayrami (eid-ul-fitri) but he didn't and i didn't hear from him till today. he said he'd probably be there for a few days or a week. it will all depend on whether the troops will move into iraq. in the meantime, he will try to call me as often as he could.
